Travel Beats, a leading overseas Indian community portal by Indian Eagle, recommends some of the best places for Durga puja 2024 in New York and New Jersey.  “Elo re Dugga elo re…”

In July 2022, Ford that linked Detroit to Chennai for 25 years shut down its production unit in India for having accumulated operating losses of over $2bn since 2012. But the Ford scion, Ambarish Das – the great grandson of legendary Henry Ford – is still in India, not as a corporate honcho but a disciple of Srila Prabhupada Maharaj, the founder of ISKCON. He is busy shaping up his guru’s vision of the world’s largest Radha-Krishna temple – the Temple of Vedic Planetarium – in Mayapur, the ultimate destination for divine love in rural Bengal.

Alfred Brush Ford, who is the chairman of the $100M project and donated over $30 million for it, took up the Hindu name, Ambarish Das, after being initiated by Swami Prabhupada on their first meeting in Dallas, Texas in 1974. He accompanied Swami Prabhupada on his first trip to India from the US in 1975, which led the course of his life towards the ocean of devotion and spirituality. He took a plunge into the deepest recess of Krishna consciousness and came out wearing a chandan tilak on his forehead, like millions of ISKCON devotees.

Located on the Ganges whose holy water seems to be washing the feet of Krishna, the Temple of Vedic Planetarium is on the verge of completion under Alfred Ford’s supervision, though the mighty construction began in 2008. Spread over more than a half of the ISKCON Mayapur campus, the Vedic Temple – also known as Mayapur Chandrodaya Mandir – is bigger than the Taj Mahal, London’s St Paul Cathedral, and the Hagia Sophia mosque in Istanbul.

Inspired by the design of the US Capitol building, India’s first religious monument of Vedic science and culture can accommodate 10,000 people together in its main prayer hall sprawling 1.5 acres. The 113-m high dome over the main temple hall is the second tallest in the world, next to the dome of St Peter’s Basilica Church in the Vatican. The dome features a grand chandelier depicting a rotating 3-dimensional model of the universe as described in the Vedic scriptures, including the Srimad Bhagavatam. The cosmic chandelier is designed in a way so as to show the hierarchy of the universe from different levels of escalators.

Not only Ambarish Das, but also his Indian American wife, Sharmila Bhattacharya from Bengal, and their two daughters who live in Florida are invested in the construction of the ISKCON Temple of Vedic Planetarium. The couple made a whopping donation from their personal wealth and collected funds from different parts of India for the temple. Anisha Ford, one of their two daughters, received a gift of $1 million from her grandmother after having earned a master’s degree from Harvard University. She donated the gift money for the construction of Mayapur Chandrodaya Mandir.

The meticulous use of Bolivian blue marble sourced from Vietnam and South America has lent pristine blue luster to the three domes of temple. The planetarium wing on the east side of the world’s biggest religious monument in Bengal will house a state-of-the-art theatre with seating capacity for 200 viewers. The large domed screen of the theatre will demonstrate India’s Vedic science of the cosmos. Exhibits to be displayed across the four floors of the planetarium wing will give an educational experience of Vedic Cosmology.

The west side of the Mayapur Temple of Vedic Planetarium houses a magnificent temple dedicated to Lord Narsimha. The five levels of the Narsimha Temple will be adorned with marvelous artworks depicting the stories of Bhakta Prahalad and Lord Narsimha. The ceiling of the Narsimha temple dome will feature nearly 450 diamond-like coffer panels with gold leaves. The divine spectacle of this wing will be complemented by ten 7-meter tall ‘deva murtis’ which will be placed in such a way so as to bow to the Lord, with their hands folded in reverence. Reportedly, the gates to the Narsimha wing will open in October 2023.

80 miles from Kolkata, Mayapur – the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a 15th century Vaishnava saint – will become a spiritual Disneyland with various facilities for devotees of different age-groups after the grand opening of the temple early in 2024. The world’s largest temple with the biggest dome in Bengal will house a Vedic science center, an institute for science and spirituality, a world-class research center, and an institute for higher studies.

The United States has recently grown vocal of the Heartland Visa, a new pathway to lawful permanent residency for skilled immigrants from different walks of life. Endorsed by the US Conference of City Mayors, the Heartland Visa is in addition to the existing popular Green Card options. This expedited path to obtaining a US Green Card has emerged from the need of offering a bait to attract skilled immigrants to cities with economic decline.

What is heartland visa, US green card options, pathways to lawful permanent residency USA, Green card for skilled immigrants

PC: Indian Eagle | Travel Beats

The US has a glorious history of immigrants having been a key driver for the socio-economic growth and innovation in coastal cities and metropolitan areas. Often referred to as a nation of immigrants, America is home to 47 million foreign-born immigrants (as of 2022) which account for not more than 14% of the total US population. Notably, India being the second largest source of skilled immigrants to the US. More than half of the total immigrant populace is mostly settled in four US states: California, Texas, Florida, and New York, according Pew Research Center.

Statistically, only 5% of highly skilled immigrants are sparsely scattered in heartland region of the United States. To be precise, the heartland regions are apparently deprived of the contributions that various skilled immigrant groups have made to a few metros in the northeast, south and west coast through relentless research, innovation, investment, and entrepreneurship. It is the immigrants who have developed 55% of America’s billion-dollar startup landscape spanning from medicine to ecommerce to technology.

In a bid to revitalize the economy of heartland regions, the US Conference of Mayors brought a bipartisan immigration proposal endorsing the Heartland Visa for skilled immigrant professionals and innovators. The Heartland Visa would act as a spur for them to rejuvenate Cleveland, Memphis, Kansas, Louisville and other economically backward cities in the heartland region with job creation, investment, innovation and technology. In lieu of that, they would have fairer chances for lawful permanent residency. Precisely, their petitions would be least likely to end up in the Green Card backlog.

Key features of Heartland Visa Program in the US

The US counties or cities with sluggish growth and low median incomes, can participate in the program. Highly skilled immigrants with a heartland visa will be required to live in the counties or cities participating in the program, but they can choose to work elsewhere. They would be allowed to select an area to live in. The petitions of high earners among the applicants will be given priority for the Heartland Visa program, as per reports.

Heartland Visas are allocated on a quarterly basis for an initial period of 3 years, which can be renewed for another 3 years. This newly endorsed Green Card program will be expanded to an allocation of minimum 100,000 visas per year in the future, depending on the number of heartland areas participating in the program.

John Lettieri, CEO and President of the Economic Innovation Group (EIG) applauded the US city mayors’ endorsement of the Heartland Visa Program and labeled it as a forward-thinking approach towards tapping into global talent for the urban areas grappling with economic stagnation and population decline.” The program seeks equitable distribution of skilled immigrant population for a balanced growth across the country.

The revolution of transforming the contemporary socio-cultural landscape of India with sky-penetrating statues seems to have spread to America. After housing the temple with the tallest gopuram (87-feet) in North Carolina and the world’s second largest Hindu temple in New Jersey, America unveiled the tallest standing statue of Lord Hanuman on 18 August following a three-day prana pratishtha ceremony in the south coast. Remarkably, the 90-feet tall Hanuman sculpture is the third tallest statue in the United States, next to the Statue of Liberty in New York, and the Pegasus & Dragon in Florida.

Tallest Hanuman statue America, 90-ft tall Hanuman statue Texas, Hanuman Statue of Union Houston

Named the Statue of Union, the Hanuman sculpture has been inaugurated at Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple in Sugar Land, Texas. It is the tallest Hanuman statue not only in USA but in North America. Made of panchdhatu, the statue stands tall on a massive pedestal designed like a lotus and supported by elephant sculptures. The statue has been shaped in the posture of blessing devotees with both hands, unlike traditional statues of Lord Hanuman holding his principal weapon in one hand.

The 90-feet tall Hanuman statue in Texas is named ‘Statue of Union’ in a tribute to Lord Hanuman who was instrumental in finding the whereabouts of Devi Sita and helping Sri Rama rescue her from Ravana. The reunion of Sri Rama and Devi Sita would not have been possible without Hanuman. Precisely, he is highly regarded as an eternal emblem of devotion, strength, commitment, and selfless service. The statue took one year to be built after the foundation was laid in May 2023.

With the Hanuman Statue of Union, Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple near Houston, has become a spiritual epicenter for Indian immigrants and Americans of Indian descent, amid the decline of social values, the erosion of human ethos, and the rise of conflicts across geographies. It is a must see for visiting Indians in the USA. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and her eight divine forms.

The newly inaugurated Statue of Union in Texas took the distinction of being the tallest Hanuman statue in USA from the one at the Hindu Temple of Delaware. It broke the record of the 45-tonne heavy and 25-feet tall Hanuman statue which was installed at the Hindu Temple of Hockessin, Delaware, in 2020. The life-size statue was constructed in Telangana and transported from Hyderabad to New York by sea for $100,000. Currently, the 50-feet tall Mangal Murti Hanuman idol in Ontario, Canada is the second tallest statue of Lord Hanuman in North America.

Indeed, the US is a land of opportunities, not only for Indian immigrants exploring pathways to lawful permanent residency but also Indian students nurturing the American Dream. Once again, the States has opened doors to 30 meritorious and deserving students from India, regardless of their socio-economic background. Among them is Deepali Kannoujia, a 10th grader from rural India, whose academic dreams are flying to America on the wings of a US government scholarship.

16-year-old Deepali, the daughter of a washerwoman, has been selected for the US State Department’s Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program. YES, one of the prestigious scholarship programs, is a coveted opportunity for needy and meritorious students from developing countries to spend an academic year in the USA. Deepali’s journey from a marginal community in Uttar Pradesh to the United States has been making headlines worldwide as a story of inspiration, resilience, and perseverance.

PC: The Better India

Born into a family that survives on such humble means as washing clothes, Deepali has grown up with dreams not privileges. She is the youngest of four siblings. As the family income from traditional laundry goes into securing two meals a day for 6-7 family members, Deepali would shudder at the thought of not reaching her academic goals, primarily because of very little financial support from home. The situation became topsy-turvy when a chronic health condition made her father bedridden, leaving her mother all alone to manage household expenses.

Currently, Deepali is busy learning the etiquette of flying and packing her bags as her first-ever international flight to USA from New Delhi is scheduled on August 19, 2024. Prerna Girls School, a nonprofit institution in Lucknow for girls from low-income families, has been a stepping stone in Deepali Kannoujia’s journey from a humble background to international recognition, and from India to USA. The school run by the Study Hall Educational Foundation has supported Deepali’s academic pursuits from the very beginning.

On seeing her ardent zeal for studies and outstanding academic results in the face of adversities, the school encouraged her to apply for the US State Department’s Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program. Of course, she had to fulfil certain eligibility criteria (elaborated below) for the scholarship.

“My mother is my biggest motivation. I have seen her work so hard for the family every day, which she continues to do till today. She can barely read and write, but she always taught me to value education and focus on my studies,” Deepali told a media publication.

What is Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program USA?

Integrated to the US foreign policy, the program is out and out a merit-based scholarship. It helps develop sustained connections between the Americans and talented students from developing nations, thereby creating space for the youth leadership growth and cross-cultural inclusivity in a civil society. The students selected for the YES program get to stay with host families in the US while attending local high schools for a year. The program also requires them to take part in civic education and community events there.

The expenses that the YES program covers for the eligible students include round trip flight tickets, pre-departure orientation, monthly stipend, health insurance, accommodation for 10-11 months, medical examinations and immunizations.

Who can apply for Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program?

Students who fall in the age group of 15 to 18 years and study in 8th, 9th, 10th or 11th grade can apply for the YES program. Intermediate-level proficiency in English speaking, writing and reading is a must, alongside a strong academic performance record. A minimum of 70% in grades over the past four consecutive school years is compulsory. The applicants must be legal residents/citizens of India or other eligible countries. Their total family income must be lesser than Rs 5 lakh. Their international travel history also matters. Those who have either not visited the US ever or stayed not more than 90 days in the US in the past 5 years are preferred for the program.

In October 2024, the US will crown the nation’s best young scientist among the 10 finalists, including six Indian Americans, of the Discovery 3M Young Scientist Challenge. Among thousands of promising innovators and inventors with a problem-solving attitude, only the best 10 budding scientists have made it to the grand finale of America’s premier middle school science competition. While vying for America’s Top Young Scientist title, the finalists demonstrate the transformative power of STEM and their commitment to solving everyday issues and pressing global challenges.

From 2012 until 2020, America’s Top Young Scientist title went to 6 Indian-origin kids named Deepika Kurup (2012), Sahil Doshi (2014), Maanasa Mendu (2016), Gitanjali Rao (2017), Rishab Jain (2018), and Anika Chebrolu (2020). Unfortunately, the Indian immigrant community did not have good luck with the ‘America’s Top Young Scientist’ title in the past three years. Hence, all eyes are on the below six Indian-origin finalists of Discovery 3M Young Scientist Challenge 2024.

Prince Nallamothula, Texas

A resident of Frisco in Texas, Prince Nallamothula who hails from the Telugu-speaking region of India has developed an innovative technique to use quantum dots in solar cells and test the cells in quantum chemistry. This wannabe quantum scientist wishes to make breakthroughs in the field of quantum technology. The US President’s Environmental Youth Award 2020 was presented to Prince Nallamothula, a 3M Young Scientist Challenge finalist. Notably, he is a TEDx Youth speaker and coach at the age of 14. He is serving as a young scientist at QuantumAstra, a startup working on next-gen computing, communication and sensing solutions in Frisco, TX.

Interestingly, the Mayor of Frisco declared 15 January 2019 as “Prince Nallamothula Day” in Frisco, recognizing his outstanding talent through an official proclamation.

Sirish Subash, Georgia

Among the 2024 3M Young Scientist Challenge finalists of Indian origin, Sirish Subash from Georgia has developed an AI-based handheld device to detect the presence of pesticide residue on agricultural produces. Science being his only passion, Sirish bagged the Agricultural Research Service Award for Excellence at the Georgia Science & Engineering Fair early this year. His AI-based pesticide detector, if developed further, could greatly enhance public health and food safety. He looks forward to developing futuristic devices to fight climate and environmental challenges for a better world.

Ronita Shukla, Massachusetts

Of all the 10 finalists for America’s Young Scientist title 2024, Ronita Shukla has developed a novel solution to get atmospheric carbon dioxide absorbed more than usual through increased photosynthesis by spirulina (blue green algae). Since spirulina grows 10 times faster than trees in the same stretch of land, it can increase the rate of photosynthesis, thereby sequestering more CO2 in the atmosphere. This 7th grader from Acton, Massachusetts adjudges mobile internet as her favorite invention of the past 100 years. She aspires to be a research scientist or professor.

Aakash Manaswi, Florida

Among the finalists of Discovery 3M Young Scientist Challenge 2024, Aakash Manaswi has prototyped a natural solution to save beehives from mite infestation. The livelihood of beekeepers in most parts of the US is threatened by the varroa mite, a parasitic pest that feeds on honey bees. The existing treatment of mite infestation is an expensive, time-consuming process. Since beekeeping is a key to the planet’s ecological balance, his invention could be more effective in saving the world’s most accomplished pollinators, honey bees.

A resident of Orlando in Florida, Aakash Manaswi aspires to become an entomologist and make beekeeping a fruitful practice.

Ankan Das, Florida

8th grader Ankan Das has developed an intelligent walking robot as a fool-proof surveillance solution to vie for the title of America’s top young scientist 2024. The robot can be put in motion without motors or gears. Ankan, an aspiring aerospace engineer, has been passionate about robotics and aeronautics since his elementary school days. He wants to grow up designing and developing new-gen technologies, such as advanced rovers and robots for space explorations. Modern-day aircraft is his favorite invention of the past 100 years. Advanced aircraft facilitates tourism, cultural exchange, global trade, and international relations.

Rithvik Suren, Connecticut

Rithvik Suren, who lives with his parents in Windsor, has made it to the finals of America’s most prestigious STEM competition for his AI-based innovation. Leveraging the power of AI intelligence, he is working on an innovative method that can predict impending occurrence of earthquakes and study sequences to make better predictions of such events in the future. Rithvik Suren wishes to study mechatronics engineering so that he could develop nano-tech solutions to threats to human life. Nanotechnology is his favorite invention of the past 100 years.

Air India is nearing the take-off phase for new routes in the US-India nonstop travel corridor after the past two years of intensive preparations, such as fleet expansion, pilot training, enhanced inflight dining, customer service overhaul, new brand identity, digital upgrades, and baggage tracking feature.

Only Dallas and Los Angeles are central to Air India’s US network expansion plans, while Seattle and Boston have been shelved for the time being, according to some officials familiar with the developments. Reportedly, Texas and Southern California Indians will get nonstop Air India flights to India, starting this November or December.

Texas, which is home to the second-largest Indian-origin community in the US, has been a strong contender for nonstop air connectivity to India from Dallas or Houston for years. Currently, San Francisco is the only city having direct connectivity to Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru for a greater part of the Southwest US. Despite the best fare deals for San Francisco to India travel, catching Air India flights from SFO Airport is not viable for those residing in Texas. Undoubtedly, the highly anticipated Air India service to Dallas would fill the demand-supply gap.

Earlier, the petitions for direct flights between Texas and India had put Dallas and Houston at loggerheads. The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex being the most populous metropolitan area in Texas and housing the Asian Indian community of nearly 2.5 lakh individuals seems to have better prospects than Greater Houston for the Tata airline. The upcoming direct Dallas to India flights would benefit South Asians, including Indians from Houston, Austin, Arlington, and the neighboring states, such as New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas.

The past few years have seen South Asians, including Indians, gravitating to South California and populating the Greater Los Angeles Area. That is why Southern California has been seeing the numbers of Asian Indians on a modest rise in Los Angeles, Irvine and their vicinity – which promises a high demand for direct flights to India from Los Angeles International Airport. Indians residing in the Phoenix metropolitan area, Arizona would drive the demand, as Air India’s interline partner, Alaska Airlines would connect them to LAX for direct flights to India.

Precisely, Dallas and Los Angeles among Air India’s new destinations in USA, are most likely to get nonstop service to India this winder 2024. Initially, Air India may induct B777-300ERs (leased from Etihad Airways and Singapore Airlines) into service to these two new destinations in the US. These are well-equipped modern aircraft. We are yet to know whether B777-300ERs would be retrofitted with premium economy seats like Air India’s brand new A350s and ex-Delta B777-200LRs.
